About us
The Icebreaker is Canada’s defence innovation network — trusted by founders, funders, DND and CAF operators, defence primes and neo-primes, and everyone making decisions to defend the nation.
Our mission: make Canada a net exporter of defence technology, by 2030.
In our first year, our proprietary research has been cited in RBC’s defence finance white paper, we’ve been featured on CIBC’s Capital Markets podcast, quoted by Canadian and international media over a dozen times, and invited to testify before Parliament.
We’ve also helped deploy $300K into Canadian startups, hosted Canada’s first defence tech hackathon, and produced two national studies that generated proprietary data on Canada’s defence industrial base — findings that directly informed Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. The Icebreaker participated in a private invite-only roundtable on Canadian Army modernization, and has worked with the Royal Canadian Navy on distributing their new problem statement frameworks to Canadian startups.
Our most recent research, produced jointly with BDC in Spring 2026, surveyed 642 business owners to reveal a three-speed divide among Canadian SMEs entering the defence sector — and became national news within days of release.
What We Do:
0600 SITREP — Canada’s first and most widely-read defence tech newsletter. A weekly morning brief, cutting through the noise on tech, procurement, capital, and capability. Subscribe →
Investor Network (CANDIN) — Co-founded and co-chaired in partnership with ONE9, the Canadian Defence Investor Network is Canada’s first private capital network of investors dedicated to defence and security.
Research & Defence Capability Mapping — We’ve conducted two national studies that created proprietary data on Canada’s defence tech ecosystem. Our 2025 dual-use capability market map (in partnership with the Council of Canadian Innovators) was submitted to DND and directly informed Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. Our 2026 national defence business census, produced jointly with BDC, surveyed 642 SMEs and exposed the capital, procurement, and regulatory barriers holding Canadian firms back.
Talent Development — We launched Canada’s first defence tech hackathon in Fall 2025. In 2026, we partnered to launch the Red Team national hackathon series, with $200,000 in prize money across Canada. DMZ Ventures' $100K Dual-Use and Sovereign Tech Investment Prize at Startupfest features The Icebreaker as a judge, directly connecting our talent pipeline to early-stage capital.
Transatlantic Partnership — Uniting Europe’s leading defence innovation network with Canada’s foremost defence tech community, The Icebreaker and the European Defense Tech Hub (EDTH) have joined forces to create direct pipelines for startups to access operational trials, investor capital, and procurement across the Atlantic.
Events & Speaking — Sought-after subject matter expert at forums across Canada at the intersection of defence, tech and finance, and curator of community meetups for VCs, founders, operators, and primes. We’ve also testified before Parliament’s Standing Committee on Industry and Technology and are regular commentators in Canadian and international media.
